The Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL) is an independent administrative authority in charge of protecting the personal data. As a personal information regulator in the digital world, it helps businesses to ensure compliance. Il also helps private individuals to control their personal data, and exercise their rights. It analyses the impact of technological innovations and emerging usages on privacy and individual liberties while working closely with its European and international counterparts to make sure to develop a harmonized policing. To carry out its missions, the CNIL has a power of advice, a power of control (on site as well as online), and it can issue administrative penalty.
